Steps To Garage Floor Paint
There are many benefits to garage floor paint including having it look nice, easy to maintain and clean spills unlike standard concrete. I recently used an epoxy floor paint designed for garage floors that turned my boring floor into a stain-fighting and peel-free surface. I did this project myself and it took the better half of a weekend. I would recommend planning ahead and make sure you start the garage floor paint project when the weather is nice outside.
Here are some supplies that you’ll need:
Epoxy floor coating (paint)
A Broom
A couple of rags
A bottle of concrete cleaner or bleach
A high-pressure hose or pressure washer
A bottle of degreaser
A stiff bristle brush
Some concrete repair compound
Some primer
A roller with an extension pole
First, you want to test how absorbent the concrete floor is by pouring some water onto the garage floor and see how long it takes to soak in. If the water isn’t soaked in and beads form, this means that the concrete for your garage floor was sealed and the painting will not work. You will then have to resort to another garage flooring idea at this point if that’s the case.
Next, you should scrub any oil spots with the degreaser and bristle brush and then wipe the area clean with a rag. Make sure the rag is clean to absorb the stains.
Next, you should clean your garage floor with a broom to make sure the surface is smooth and ready for a wash. You can remove stains by using some concrete cleaner or bleach in conjunction with a pressure washer for tougher stains.
At this point the stains should be removed and now it’s time to wash the garage floor with the pressure washer and use a wet/dry vacuum to get rid of any dirt or standing water off the floor. Let the floor dry completely before proceeding to Step 5.
If you see any noticeable cracks in the concrete, use the concrete-repair compound to fill them in and let dry before proceeding to the next step.
Now it’s time to apply the primer with the use of a roller and the extension pole. After completion of this step, allow the primer to set in and dry for at least 8 hours before proceeding to Step 7. That’s why I started early on a Saturday morning (6am) to get a head start.
By now, the primer should be dry and it’s time to apply the first coat of garage floor paint with the roller and a paint brush. After applying the first coat, you’ll need to wait at least 24-hours before putting on the second coat of floor paint.
That’s all there’s to it! If you don’t have the time to invest painting your garage floor or using other garage floor covering, you could always hire a professional contractor but be prepared to pay a premium for their services.
